ABC to read – Could you help a local child discover the joy of reading?

IMAGINE BEING a child and sitting in a classroom when everyone else seems to know what the words on the page say. You want to join in, but reading feels difficult. Perhaps you have fallen behind your classmates and, little by little, you have stopped putting up your hand. You may even start to believe that you are simply ‘not a reader’. This is where ABC to read can make a real difference.
ABC to read is an award-winning local charity that has been supporting children who struggle with reading since 2004. Working with primary schools across Berkshire, we recruit, train and support volunteers who provide one-to-one reading support to children who need a little extra help. Today, our trained volunteers are supporting more than 500 children each week in over 100 schools. Recent feedback from schools has shown the impact this can have; children are improving their reading accuracy and confidence, developing a more positive attitude towards reading, and becoming more engaged in the classroom. But there are many more children who could benefit from this support – and that means we need more volunteers.
You do not need to be a teacher or have previous experience of working with children. Our volunteers receive training, resources and ongoing support. They normally work with up to three children, spending around 30 minutes with each child twice a week during term time. Sessions involve reading together, talking, playing games, and exploring books and other reading materials. What matters most is patience, enthusiasm, and a belief that every child can become a confident reader.
We are now looking for more volunteers around Caversham. If you could spare some time to help a child discover the confidence and pleasure that reading can bring, ABC to read would love to hear from you. Or, if your child could benefit from our comprehensive literacy support, please do reach out to us.
