Ecotip – Keep topped up and cut plastic bottle use

Keep topped up and cut plastic bottle use

by Phil Chatfield

Many of us like to make sure we have plenty to drink when we are out and about. Picking up a bottle of mineral water from a shop along the way has become a routine for lots of us. The problem is, in the UK we use 35 million plastic bottles every day, most of which are immediately discarded.

But it doesn’t need to be like this. Increasingly, people take their own bottle of water with them on their trips, whether a visit to town or a day in the countryside.

So what can you do if you need to refill your bottle? This was the question City to Sea, a Bristol based, not-for-profit organisation, tackled. They worked with owners of businesses across the country to set up a network of refill stations. They developed an App for smartphones to find your nearest refill station, identified by the logo shown here. With more than 20,000 businesses registered, you will never be far from one.

It may seem like a small step, but if just 1 in 10 of us refilled once a week, we’d save around 340 million plastic bottles a year.
